On-Campus Employment

On-campus employment primarily means positions paid by the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) and conducted on campus. Employment with outside organizations which are physically located on campus may be considered on-campus employment only if they provide direct services to students (such as the bookstore or dining services). Employment with an outside contractor which does not provide services to students is considered off-campus employment.

  • For F-1 students, no clearance is needed from ISSS for on-campus employment; however, you will need to complete an I-9 form to show that you are eligible to work in the United States, and a W-4 form to indicate which taxes the University should withhold from you.
  • For J-1 students, authorization is ALWAYS required in advance of beginning the on-campus employment. Log on to iTerp and submit the Application for Student Employment Authorization" Please wait for approval before beginning the on-campus employment.

F-1 and J-1 students can be authorized to work on campus for a maximum of 20 hours per week during the semester and may work a maximum of 40 hours per week on campus during the summer and winter breaks. The work week for on-campus positions runs from Sunday to Saturday. If a semester begins in the middle of a week, a student should ensure that all work for that week is kept to 20 hours per week or less.

A full Graduate Assistantship (RA/TA/GA) is considered the equivalent of 20 hours per week on-campus. F-1/J-1 students with full-time assistantships may not undertake additional on- or off-campus employment during the academic year. Assistantship holders may work an additional 20 hours per week during the vacation periods.

Not all positions that take place on campus are considered on-campus work. The following are some examples of work that would not be permitted as on campus work.

  • private tutoring (not paid directly by UMD)
  • working for construction companies doing work at UMCP
  • driving for delivery companies on campus
  • Employment with external companies where the work will be conducted remotely from campus
  • Employment with USM campuses other than UMCP

This is not an exhaustive list, but provides you with examples. Please make an appointment with an ISSS advisor if you are unsure whether the work you are doing qualifies as on-campus employment.

To determine whether an off-campus location is educationally affiliated with UMCP, USCIS looks to see whether the affiliation is associated with the University's established curriculum or related to contractually funded research projects at the post-graduate level. In this case, the employment must be directly related to the student's educational program. Please see more information about on-campus employment at an off-campus location.
