J-2 Employment
J-2 dependents are allowed to work in the U.S. with an employment authorization document (EAD) issued by USCIS.
A J-2 dependent can apply online for an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. The fee for the application is $520. Instructions for Form I-765 and the required documentation can be found on the USCIS website.
If approved, the applicant will receive an EAD photo identification card. The applicant cannot begin work until they receive their EAD card. They should show the card to their prospective employer.
You can download Form I-765 and submit the required documents to the Filing Address for Foreign Students based on the state where you live. If you do, we recommend completing the form by typing in the information and signing it with a blue pen. When submitting passport photos, print your name and SEVIS number on the back of each photo.
The J-2 dependent may apply for an extension of the EAD card up to 180 days before the end date of the initial EAD. We recommend you submit applications for extension at least 90 days before the current EAD expires.
NOTE: Income earned by J-2's is subject to Social Security taxes as well as federal, state, and local income tax. The J-2 can apply for a Social Security number with their initial EAD application.
