Transcripts & Credit Transfer
Transcripts
In order for your study abroad coursework to transfer back to your UMD record, Education Abroad needs an official transcript from your host institution/program provider.
Request Transcript from Your Host Institution/Program Provider
Host institutions/program providers should send official transcripts directly to Education Abroad at the request of the student.
- For students on Maryland-in programs → Education Abroad will request transcripts directly.
- For students on other programs → Look for instructions from your host institution/program provider on how to request your transcript be sent to your home university. Physical transcripts should be mailed to the following address with tracking information:
Education Abroad
University of Maryland
1118 H.J. Patterson Hall
4065 Campus Drive
College Park, MD 20742
EA can also accept digital transcripts at educationabroad@umd.edu if they are sent directly to our office by the host institution/program provider.
→ Please note that we cannot accept any transcripts that are sent by the student. The transcript must come directly from the host institution or program provider in order to be considered “official.”
Credit Transfer Timeline
You will receive an email from EA once we have received your study abroad transcript from your host institution/program provider. Please note it can take several months to receive transcripts from institutions/providers abroad.
EA will evaluate your study abroad transcript and send it to the Registrar’s Office for processing within 5 business days. If you earned resident credit abroad, EA will enter those grades directly. Please note that Resident credit and Transfer Credit will likely not post at the same time.
→ If any of your courses are not approved in the study abroad course database, you will need to submit them for approval.
The Registrar’s Office will post transfer credit to your UMD record within 4-6 weeks after they receive your credits from EA. Please note that the Registrar is unable to post credit for courses that have not yet been evaluated.
Once the transfer credit posts to your record, you should see it at the top of your unofficial transcript. Resident credit will appear under the term you went abroad. If credits are not posted to your UMD record within 6 weeks of EA receiving your transcript, please contact your EA Advisor.
