As a J-1 Exchange Visitor, you can teach, conduct research, share special skills, study or receive on-the-job training at UMD. Your program can last from a few weeks to up to five years.
The U.S. Department of State authorizes the University of Maryland's International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) to sponsor the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program.
The program's goal is for participants to share academic ideas and research. It also aims to promote increased mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries.
Participants can serve in full-time, academic positions.
Duration: 3 weeks to 5 years maximum
The exchange of professors and research scholars promotes the exchange of ideas, research, mutual enrichment and linkages between research and academic institutions in the United States and foreign countries.
No minimum to 6 months
Professors, research scholars and other individuals with similar education or accomplishments travel to the United States on a short-term visit to lecture, observe, consult, train or demonstrate special skills at research institutions, museums, libraries, post-secondary accredited academic institutions or similar types of institutions.
Duration: 3 week minimum to 12 months
Foreign specialists have the opportunity to observe American institutions and methods of practice in their professional fields, and to share their specialized knowledge with their American colleagues.
