Faculty Highlight

Kenneth Filler
As an architect at Gardner Architects LLC in Silver Spring, Maryland, Ken focuses on crafting residential architecture that integrates sustainable, site-specific strategies at a human scale. Prior to joining Gardner Architects, Ken spent five years designing affordable housing for urban communities in the DC area, including the first affordable assisted living in southeast DC.
Ken is a repeat faculty member in the foundational design studios in the Architecture program, ARCH 400/401. In addition to design studio, he teaches courses related to visual representation and architectural drawing, including a new elective: ARCH448B, Design Drawing: Explorations in Mixed-Media. He continues to experiment with visual communication strategies that promote the intersection of manual and digital drawing techniques in both practice and academia.
Prior to the University of Maryland, Ken instructed design studios in The George Washington University’s Interior Architecture program, as well as a community analysis seminar at the University of the District of Columbia. He holds a Master of Architecture & Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Maryland. Ken resides in Frederick, Maryland and is an active member of the downtown Frederick community.
