Scheduling an Appointment to Apply for a Social Security Number

Students and scholars need to schedule an appointment to apply for a social security number.  Walking into an office without an appointment will result in being asked to leave and return once an appointment has been scheduled..

Steps to schedule an appointment:

• Call 1-800-772-1213
• Use this chart to find the office you wish to visit and provide the zip code to the agent
  • If the appointment time is too far into the future, have some back up locations and provide the zip code to the agent to check for any earlier appointments at alternate locations.
  • Even if you live in Maryland you can visit any Social Security office in other states or DC.
• Prior to your appointment, make sure you have reviewed the ISSS website and  gathered all the required documentation for your appointment.
