In order for the ISSS to issue a DS-2019, scholars must demonstrate financial support for the full period of the requested academic appointment.To ensure compliance with FLSA and Faculty Affairs policy, host departments should use the Faculty Affairs Salary Guidelines to determine salary for postdoctoral and research positions. Paid researchers and faculty should be awarded a salary that meets department and University equity standards and is commensurate with the scholar’s related experience.

The J-1 Scholar category at University of Maryland is used by academic departments to bring in international Exchange Visitors as researchers, short-term scholars and visiting professors. The J-1 status is appropriate for most research scholars and for temporary faculty who do not hold permanent, tenure or tenure-track positions. Examples of temporary faculty include post-doctoral associate, faculty assistant, and visiting scientist and visiting professor.An individual primarily teaching, lecturing, observing or consulting at a post-secondary accredited educational institution.
