Fulbright Scholars Tackle Corporate Crimes, Refugee Education, Group Counseling Breakthroughs and the Transnational Pro-Life Movement

Past and present Fulbright scholars share their work visiting UMD, going abroad.

1. Jelmar Meester, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam

Corporate crime—how do we study it, who does it impact, and what can we do to hold organizations accountable? With the help of some of the greatest minds in criminology at UMD, Prof. Emerita Sally Simpson, Prof. Dr. Robert Brame, and Prof. Bianca Bersani, Meester will investigate how many corporate violations go undetected through the study of various economic models.

2. Sylwia Kuźma-Markowska, University of Warsaw

Sylwia Kuzma-Markowska knows that history doesn’t exist in a bubble. For the next year, alongside UMD history professor Piotr Kosicki, she will be examining the influence of  America’s pro-life movement on Poland’s post-communism policies from the 1970s through the early 1990s.

3. Dennis Kivlighan, University of Maryland

From the University of Palermo, UMD professor of counseling psychology Dennis Kivlighan is exploring best practices to make group therapy successful, specifically for those affected by eating disorders.

4. Colleen O’Neal, University of Maryland

Longtime College of Education professor Dr. Colleen O’Neal is dedicated to helping students succeed everywhere. In Malaysia, refugees are not recognized by the government which presents challenges in schooling. To improve classroom dynamics, O’Neal is working towards preventative interventions which allow students to focus and regulate their stress before it interferes with their education.
