Education Abroad to Award Nearly $1 Million in Scholarships for 2027 Study Abroad

The University of Maryland's Education Abroad office will award approximately $1 million in scholarships to students studying abroad in 2027—the largest investment in Education Abroad funded scholarships to date.

The expanded funding builds upon existing scholarship opportunities, including the Gilman Guarantee, while introducing several new initiatives designed to make study abroad more accessible for Maryland students.

Among the enhancements for the upcoming year:

  • Earlier scholarship decisions on a rolling basis to give students and families better clarity about available funding as they financially plan for study abroad.
  • Higher Departmental Fund awards, with eligible students receiving up to $2,500 for short-term programs and $4,000 for semester programs.
  • First Abroad Scholarships, providing eligible first-generation students studying abroad for the first time with guaranteed awards of $1,000 for short-term programs or $2,000 for semester programs.
  • A new Graduate Student Travel Grant, launching in Winter 2027, will provide selected graduate students participating in Maryland-led short-term programs with a $1,000 award.
  • A new Education Abroad Emergency Fund that will support students facing unexpected financial hardship before or during their program abroad.

More information about eligibility, application timelines and available scholarships can be found on the Education Abroad Scholarships website.
