During IEW last November, as part of a new IIE Korea-U.S. initiative promoting STEM exchanges and collaboration, the Global Learning Initiatives (GLI) team hosted 30 undergraduate students from Korea at UMD, underscoring UMD's commitment to foster global partnerships and create meaningful cultural and academic exchanges by showcasing the university as a hub for international collaboration and innovation. The students, currently studying in the U.S., explored UMD's academic resources, aligning with their interests in bioengineering, aviation and startups.
A highlight was their visit to the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, where they engaged with multidisciplinary engineering projects. On campus, they toured the Neutral Buoyancy Research Facility, gaining insights into its pivotal role in astronaut training and research. They also dined at Yahentamitsi and South Dining Halls, experiencing an authentic taste of UMD life.

Day two focused on academic exploration, including a tour of A. James Clarke Hall. The students visited labs within the Fischell Institute for Biomedical Devices and the BIOE program, learning about the ecosystem supporting entrepreneurial research—from prototyping and manufacturing to navigating clinical, regulatory, and intellectual property challenges. At Terrapin Works, they witnessed the more than 100 advanced 3D printers and other production systems capable of creating complex materials. The visit also included a stop at the ANSC Campus Farm, hailed as the “jewel” of the Department of Animal & Avian Sciences, where they observed hands-on learning opportunities in animal sciences.
The visit concluded with a stop at the K-Expo, an annual event hosted by the Korean Student Association. The expo showcased cultural performances, games, and cuisine, providing an opportunity for the Korean students to connect with UMD peers in a vibrant exchange of culture and camaraderie.
